serve it up – phase final

I have the server setup pretty much complete. I found out to set static dhcp addresses to all of the computers on my network to give me some consistency. Again I decided to scrap the use of dns for the server, but in the process I discovered something called dynamic dns that should help me do what I originally wanted to achieved, and a whole lot more.
I’ve heard of ddns before, but never really knew what its purpose was. The thing is, I don’t have a static ip address for my router at home, which receives a dynamic one from my ISP. So I set up an account with www.dyndns.org and I found out how to configure my router to update the the ddns service with my correct ip address resolved from my the domain name I choose, joef.homelinux.com. The next step was to configure the correct (but secure) port forwarding on the router to forward all incoming traffic to the maverick server. Then I installed the ddclient daemon on the server, which aids in the process of updating my routers current ip address. Now, not only can I remotely access this box via ftp and ssh inside my network, I now have the possibility to access it outside of my network. I can also set up the http server and host websites from the lab. Pretty cool if I ask my self.
“Self, do you think this is cool?” “Yes, self,” I replied, “I think it is very cool. You should buy take the money that you pay for hosting services and buy a new server. Then you could host you website from home.”
At this point, I cant truly confirm that this is all working correctly, its still in its testing phase…damn near complete none the less. The final step is to get another domain name possibly more suitable for the lab, pay the money, and register it. Then ultimately host all of my sites here in house. But that brings some financial constraints that can be taken care of further down the road.
This is a big step as far as my networking knowledge is concerned. But the productivity doesn’t stop here. Its on to the next project. Which, at this point hasn’t been determined yet.

serve it up: phase III

So I got LAMP install on the server. Again I decided to scrap the DNS thing and was going to set all my PC’s to have static ip addresses, but I think I am going to hold off until I get sick of typing 192.168.0.103 in to the browser. Installing ProFtpd was a snap as well. I can now access the server with gftp…were in, were out, were sleeping.
At this point my next step is to install samba and get that configured. A file server is the third component to my accomplishment with this thing. So, here goes nothing, the third variable to the equation. I am running out of words to say, until next time.

Everything at this point seems to be jiving. As my first experience with configuring a server and my one millionth with ssh, needless to say I was a bit frustrated. Getting ssh to work on a server should be a snap. I think ultimately I kept getting confused with the ssh client and the ssh daemon. I don’t think the Pabst helped at all, but at least I was feeling good. Regardless, I got the server now running ssh and can log into it within my network. If worst comes to worse I can also sftp into it and pull some files from it.
I also got apache installed and can view post 80 with the ip address. I guess my next step is to configure the domain name and we should be in business. That sounds easy, but I tend to be a complete reject when it comes to dns, so we’ll see. Regardless, I feel I have taken my networking skills one step further. I also traded for the smaller monitor as well as the original PS/2 keyboard.. Its taking me back to where I need to be and things are simpler here.
So, next step dns….I have decide to name the server maverick. No deep reason behind it, just that the monitor that came with it had a model number with the prefix “MV” and thats the first thing that pooped into my head. Maybe it will bring good luck. Maybe mel gibson will visit me in my dream and guide my the rest of the way. So we marched on….

Tonight the creation of the server begins. The installation of gentoo is complete, it is now in the process of updating itself. It seems the thing that is taking the longest time is updating gcc 3.X to gcc 4.X. The box only has a 233 mhz processor in it, so I cant expect it to do anything speedy. I am hoping by tomorrow I can begin installing the necessary software packages and then begin configuring everything.
Honestly, I am surprise at how quickly the installation of gentoo has gone. It was probably the quickest and less painful thus far. Every other attempt has been given up on for a number of reasons. But, I have a new hard drive in there as well as a new sense of hope, which is certainly developing the confidence I didn’t have before.
I decided to go with gentoo for the OS not only because of its the ability of configuration on it, but I tried the LAMP version of ubuntu and it broke on two attempts. Then zenwalk was my second choice, but that broke on an attempted install as well. Plus I am in no hurry and that certainly is a must with gentoo.
With the ultimate goal being the creation of a local file and/or web sever, the charge must continue. I have the power of a gagillion ebooks the gentoo forums, so excuses should be a no show.
