Even though the boss kind of didn’t know the words to the song, this is pretty goddamn cool. Well, to me, at least.

sunday social #27 – rock n roll weekend

24 November 2008 | music, podcast, rock show, sunday social, the brown out | 1 Response

To sum up my weekend in a few words it would be pretty simple – rock n roll. It started out with a jam session right after work on friday. One of these days we are going to get the whole band together and shows will happen. Until then all we can do is create. Though I am probably overall a smarter person, I wish I had half the talent this dude’s got.

Once the jam session ended, we did another podcast episode. It wasn’t as lively as the first and Rachel’s attitude was a little off, but some good content came out of it and I am looking forward to the next one. I have yet to get the thing on itunes, but for now you can get the feed here. We called this one the official first episode. It was a lot of fun and there will certainly be more to come.

On Saturday night I went to the orbit room to see The Gaslight Anthem, Rise Against, Thrice and The Alkaline Trio. It was a hell of a time. The gaslight anthem rocked it harder than I thought they would. Our prediction is the band is going to be huge one day. For the others, I guess I have jut gotten too far removed from these bands. Its been a long time since Revolutions Per Minute, The Illusion of Safety, and From here to Infirmary. I understand bands mature and sounds change. I just find it a little difficult to handle some times.

As for the forthcoming week, its a short work one and I get to eat a shit load of food and see the family. My plan is to bring pizza rolls as my dish to pass. I have a feeling everyone will have an opinion of my non-traditional dish, but I guarantee there will be no more left once its leaving time.

sunday social #24 – always be closing

Holy smokes it’s been a while since my last post here and a lot has gone on in my life during these last thirty days. Day by day its getting colder and colder as we carry on towards winter ’08. Before I know it, 2009 will be here and another year of my will be behind me.

This past weekend was halloween and this year I attended a party as a pirate. I was quite proud that I whipped my costume up in about ten minutes. If I had some pictures, I’d show them but to be honest I’ve had some better ones. If I had to do it all over again, I would have traveled south to the fest. I think I’m going to make next year the year and take the plunge. I don’t think rachel would take it with me, so I need to round up a couple others that would appreciate it as much as I would.

One thing I haven’t done in a while is see a good rock and roll show. Don’t get me wrong. I got to see Mustard Plug rock it a few weeks back, but since then its been a little dry. Every time I die is playing this week in Grand Rapids and I would like to attend. As far as I’m concerned that band puts on one hell of a show. But opting out of this doesn’t lead me to a boring weekend. No no. I along with a few other brave souls will be heading up to northern Michigan for one last hurrah before the holiday slash snowy season begins. That’s right, Bear Lake, MI here we come. One final thing to mention is the presidential election is this week. McCain seemed to have given up on the mitten, but only time will tell. It’s going to be an interesting Tuesday night. As for now, Entourage is on and there’s candy to be eaten.

EMO WARS

Wow, this was an interesting story. I first heard about it on punknews then it made the front page of digg last week. Has the time come for the punks and metal heads to take back tier scene? Maybe only in mexico. I suppose it may be a coincidence that alternative press is writing an article about the “punk” seen there this month as well. There is proof, check out this photo.

Who would have ever thought this trend would become this popular or that it would take on a life of its own? I am not sure if this trend would have caught on when I was in high school. Their were the goth kids who listened to Marilyn mason. There was also the ravers for while there but ultimately not many punk rockers or metal heads. I do have to say that it would have been way cooler if the girls in high school dressed like these emo chicks. Some of these girls are real lookers. Probably the most amusing part of this whole story is the use of the work emosexual. I have never heard this one before. I think I kind of like it. Sounds like something straight out of the urban dictionary although I haven’t had this for my word of the day yet. And apparently, the word fits in even better in spanish:

“Emosexual is an obvious play on homosexual, especially in Spanish, where the H is silent.

In other news, if anyone out there is into tech podcasts, you should really check out the latest mac break weakly. One of the panelists is the drummer from weezer. I can’t say its the best one so far. I would put in very close contention with episode 41 – ray danger.

And has anyone visited the intersections web site lately. It looks the the webmaster went all web 2.0 on it. The google calendar is a great idea but when you click on the event and there are no details, its rather annoying. And why the hell would you add a digg button to the calendar page? Either this guy is a moron or digg needs to revised their about page. Seriously intersection, nice story.

So last night I attended yet another punk rock show. Only if rachel understood. I myself begin questioning whether or not the hour and a half trek through treacherous michigan winter weather, paying ten dollars to get in, and buying drinks at the bar is going to be worth it. But macs is a bit different. Anytime I have been there its never packed and the blue ribbons are only two bucks a pop. Frankly, you cant afford not to.

This night’s show consisted of hell or highwater, cheap girls, fake problems, and smoke or fire. We showed up in time to catch half of hell or highwater’s set. I really like these guys. We need more of this kalamazoo. It was even better that they played rainbow in the dark even though the singer only knew some of the words.

Cheap girls played next but I didnt really pay attention to them. uh…right.

Next to take the stage was fake problems. Three things will stick in my head regarding this band on this night. a) the guitar player is very small. Like really small. I was peeing next to him and I thought he was a little kid (not like I looked at his weenis or anything, just measured by height) b) The singer was wearing cowboy boots. but whatever, the dude had a lot of soul for a white boy. c) the bass player’s bass guitar was ridiculously small. Come to find out, these are not that unique. All in all I dug them and they had a very interesting story about a wild turkey. Not to be confused with the wild turkey.

Finally, smoke or fire took the stage. Like before, they rocked my face off. Except this time I wasn’t surrounded by thirteen-year-old girls who needed to be protected from my drunken banter by their fourteen-year-old boyfriend and didn’t know who the hell Smoke or Fire was. Songs were sung and instruments were played and all was awesome. Except they didnt play this sinking ship. That kind of put them on my shit list then after talking to their goofy drummer they were taken off.

Ultimately it was a fun show, the guys weren’t dicks, and fisher had a good birfday. I also met gwomper from Avail at the bar. Apparently he plays the bass in Smoke or Fire. He toasted to Michigan and said that we were crazy for driving in this weather.

Fun fun.

take that 2007

So christmas is over and the new year will begin in a few days. Will this mean the hair will be gone? Who knows at this point, I think I will decide this weekend. I had a good x-mas. I got money for a macbook and went to a punk rock show. So to sum it up in a few words – happy, cold, and drunk.

So yeah, I saw a wilhelm scream and the flatliners play in Lansing on Saturday. I honestly thought there would be more people there with the success of the band and that local act the swellers we playing. I guess they are not technically local and it was two days before x-mas. But that why we have these days off. To spend them drinking cheap beer and listening to sweet bands play in a smelly club. I gotta say a wilhelm scream were the best I have seen them even though their guitar player seemed a bit intoxicated. The flatliners certainly lived up to my expectations as far as a live show goes and they are pretty nice guys.

I’m hopping on the band wagon. My favorite nine for 2007 in no particular order:

  • The Gaslight AnthemSink or Swim
  • Chuck RaganFeast or Famine
  • The FlatlinersThe Great Awake
  • A Wilhelm ScreamCareer Suicide
  • Strung OutBlackhawks over Los Angeles
  • Bomb the Music Industry!Get Warmer
  • Comeback KidBroadcasting
  • Every Time I DieThe Big Dirty
  • Signal to NoiseKodiak

As you can see the collection is not very diverse. Oh well, I like what I like. I also decided to cut the beard off while leaving the mustache for the night. I got a new face and a new place to stay for 2008 eight. More to come tomorrow.

blueprint to the fall

There is something about the air in chicago. There also something about seeing your favorite band rip apart the stage like you have never seen before. I had the best of both last night seeing Strung Out play at the Metro. Made the trek to and from in one night and dont regret a second of it. I guess I have one – I dont have any photographic evidence. You’d think we all the technology these days I would have some.

Oh well, I guess that is what I get for breaking my telephone. They played all the hits even the exhumation of virginia madison. I pretty much was satisfied at that point and it was half way through the set. Its the best I have ever seen them play…not saying the other times were bad just that they played longer than the other two and at this point they had even better songs in their arsenal.

strung out

All in all it was the ending to a perfect weekend. They other bands weren’t bad either. I am ghost were a lot better than I thought they would be and really nice guys. Evergreen Terrace could have kept there set a bit shorter, but they played some catchier songs which is a bit different from the rest of the metalcore these days and for the most part made up for it.

Also got to do some rocking this weekend. These songs are going somewhere even if it kills me. I see a bright light at the end of the tunnel. shine motherf-er, shine!!
