sunday social #24 – always be closing

3 November 2008 | blog, digg, google, house, linux, phone, rock show, sunday social | 1 Response

Holy smokes it’s been a while since my last post here and a lot has gone on in my life during these last thirty days. Day by day its getting colder and colder as we carry on towards winter ’08. Before I know it, 2009 will be here and another year of my will be behind me.

This past weekend was halloween and this year I attended a party as a pirate. I was quite proud that I whipped my costume up in about ten minutes. If I had some pictures, I’d show them but to be honest I’ve had some better ones. If I had to do it all over again, I would have traveled south to the fest. I think I’m going to make next year the year and take the plunge. I don’t think rachel would take it with me, so I need to round up a couple others that would appreciate it as much as I would.

One thing I haven’t done in a while is see a good rock and roll show. Don’t get me wrong. I got to see Mustard Plug rock it a few weeks back, but since then its been a little dry. Every time I die is playing this week in Grand Rapids and I would like to attend. As far as I’m concerned that band puts on one hell of a show. But opting out of this doesn’t lead me to a boring weekend. No no. I along with a few other brave souls will be heading up to northern Michigan for one last hurrah before the holiday slash snowy season begins. That’s right, Bear Lake, MI here we come. One final thing to mention is the presidential election is this week. McCain seemed to have given up on the mitten, but only time will tell. It’s going to be an interesting Tuesday night. As for now, Entourage is on and there’s candy to be eaten.

this is why I love digg

So, Eric Lindros decides to retire huh? Wow, if this guy wasn’t one of the biggest disappointments of the 90′s I don’t know what was. I remember when he was a junior, I was growing up playing hockey, and there was so much hype around him. He was on the cover of every hockey publication with people claiming he was gonna be the next great one.

So this idiot gets drafted by the Quebec Nordiques and refuses to play for them. For a guy who didn’t play a single minute int the NHL that’s a pretty god damn arrogant move if you ask me. Go ahead, ask me. (on a site not, I find it amusing that a short time after, the team moved to Colorado and became one of the most dominant team in the NHL during the nineties). According to Wikipedia, his parents had a hand in this career move. Which makes me believe that this whole parent being his agent thing seems like it was not helping his career at all. Someone should have advised him to cut the umbilical cord already, jesus, you’re an adult. Then the whole thing with Bobby Clarke arose that also seemed to have something to do with his parents. I mean it’s Bobby fucking Clarke. He didn’t get to where he is because he was a shitty hockey player. When someone like that gives you advise, you should probably drop the ego for a moment listen.

So where does all of this lead him. To retire at 34 with a half-ass career and 6 concussions. Granted, he certainly had his moments and racked up a surprisingly decent number of points. But a player that was labeled so “dominant” makes me believe he forgot the number one rule in hockey – Keep Your Head Up! I just hope players like Syndney Crosbey read this chapter of hockey history and take a turn at the fork in the road. Or for that matter turn around and go in the opposite direction.

P. S. I was reading through the comments on digg for the submission of this story and the topic of the Hall of fame came up for him and here are a couple of responses that I found quite amusing:

If there is a Hall of Fame category for being Scott Steven’s bitch, then, by all means, put him in. If Dino Cicerelli ain’t in, Lindros ain’t in either.

He won’t go to the Hall, but his helmet will, right next to Cap’n Crunch’s elbow and shoulder pads.

I have been listening to a shit load of podcasts lately. Punk rock related if I can find them, yet mainly tech related. It seems every person that was on the screen savers, got in touch with every other geeky friend of theirs and know has tech-related show on the internet. I love it. The number of them is truly endless. It brings me back to the techTV days in college. Getting up on all the latest tech trends I miss in my daily visits to digg. I mean I guess I am up on the latest trends, but to here intelligent discussions about them lets me understand them a lot better.

My one exception is diggnation. Seeing as how kevin rose seems to be one of the coolest guy and the website he created gets my attention more that anything else in the world, I thought the show would be sweet. I guess it wouldn’t be that bad but alex albrecht’s voice drives me friggin insane. I have tried many times and still cannot get through an entire episode. His humor is ridiculous and it seems to worsen the drunker the two get. Regardless, the thought of getting drunk with one of my friends each week, talk about bullshit, and record it sounds like a fun idea. I am thinking the lab just found a new project. We can have a weekly broadcast, it could be sweet.
