sunday social #24 – always be closing

3 November 2008 | blog, digg, google, house, linux, phone, rock show, sunday social | 1 Response

Holy smokes it’s been a while since my last post here and a lot has gone on in my life during these last thirty days. Day by day its getting colder and colder as we carry on towards winter ’08. Before I know it, 2009 will be here and another year of my will be behind me.

This past weekend was halloween and this year I attended a party as a pirate. I was quite proud that I whipped my costume up in about ten minutes. If I had some pictures, I’d show them but to be honest I’ve had some better ones. If I had to do it all over again, I would have traveled south to the fest. I think I’m going to make next year the year and take the plunge. I don’t think rachel would take it with me, so I need to round up a couple others that would appreciate it as much as I would.

One thing I haven’t done in a while is see a good rock and roll show. Don’t get me wrong. I got to see Mustard Plug rock it a few weeks back, but since then its been a little dry. Every time I die is playing this week in Grand Rapids and I would like to attend. As far as I’m concerned that band puts on one hell of a show. But opting out of this doesn’t lead me to a boring weekend. No no. I along with a few other brave souls will be heading up to northern Michigan for one last hurrah before the holiday slash snowy season begins. That’s right, Bear Lake, MI here we come. One final thing to mention is the presidential election is this week. McCain seemed to have given up on the mitten, but only time will tell. It’s going to be an interesting Tuesday night. As for now, Entourage is on and there’s candy to be eaten.

Holy smoke these last couple of weeks have appeared before my eyes. First off, I went to texas for five days on a excursion for work. I learned a few things while there. Most of them fairly irrelevant but at the same time very interesting. Everyone drives a pickup truck, bar-b-que is on every corner, and I have never heard “ya’ll” used so much in a week let a lone an entire conversation. Regardless of the culture shock, work was done, friends were made, and fun was had.

I have also toook the step to update my site here. WordPress is quite the animal. Ease and confusion set in at the same time as I dredge my way through, but all will come in due time. I still have not completely figured out how to use images correctly. Because of this I am assured a crap load of broken links in these blog posts, but whatever, I will figure it out. Kinks getting out, bare with me.

Also, its safe to say a band with me included does exist. Rock or rock? That is the question. Regardless, I am stoked and the future only holds gnarly things. News on this later.

wait what??

spam

The other day, after checking the email account in which my comment posts and user submission get sent to , I have about three hundred emails in the box. Seeing as how over the last 2+ years, only 3 people have left a comment and 4 people actually sent a user submission to me, I figured I got spammed. This happened once last summer on a post I created almost two years ago. It actually looked like a human wrote them, so I left them there out of amusement.

But this was a different story. There were upwards of three hundred all wanting me to visit their del.icio.us list of vagina links and sites full of free ring tones. The email address names were quite amusing as well. This is one of my favorites:

buywellbutrin@aolin7.com

And I added the mailto link so I can hope someone will spam them back.

As a result of this I have removed my user submission and comment forms from the site. I am in the process of setting up wordpress and they have a plugin to handle problems like this. Until then, those who know how to contact me will.

So I see today apple unleashed a couple of cool new things today. Like many I was expecting a new laptop, but not really this thing. It seems the only thing about this guy that grabs me is the thinness of it. It just looks way to chinsy for my careless ass. I was hoping for a smaller version of the macbook pro. Same look, only smaller with a 12” wide screen. It’s appears to be the same size as the mac book, only thinner. No optical drive, only one usb port, and no firewire drives me away. Looks like I will continue to proceed with my previous decision.

I do like the idea of this time capsule thing. I mean, theres nothing at all revolutionary about it, but if it works well with the macs on your network, thats a pretty good backup solution thats decently priced.

In personal news, I dont really have much news at all. I am now a (semi) proud home owner, so I guess thats news. Between the holidays, getting things squared away with this house and being sick as a dog, I haven’t had any motivation but do much else but sit around and surf the web. I do have plans though. Even though I’m off to a slow start, this year I resoluted to hit the gym hard, blog more, and write more music. I am still in the process of re-vamping this site. Due to the the reasons mentioned above, I lag. I have really moved away from making it look cool and focused on the functionality and usability. Which involves a bit of hacking wordpress by getting elbows deep in some php code.

Soon have a new place to live, a new lab to set up, and new hardware to play with. If this isn’t enough motivation, I dont know what it is.

I finally got my new phone back last week…I guess this post is a bit late. I have plans to re-design my blog in the near future hear and decided on giving this micro-blogging service another go. I have given up on jaiku as you can see from the widget on this site. I dont really know why. Probably because its friendless or maybe because google bought it. Maybe that’s a better thing?

I am thinking I want to give twitter a go. It seems stable enough and with its mobile version at my fingers tips via this phone, I am going to be hitting this thing hard. See you in social networking land.

In other news, the recording process is impeading greatly due to equipment malfunctions and the house buying process. Once this holiday season is over maybe I can come full circle with it all.

I have made a couple of updates to my site this last week. I added a couple of feeds from some sites I have accounts with to utilize the sharing that these services have to offer. A snippet of javascript makes integrating these things a snap.

jaiku

First of all, I decided to sign up for one of these micro-blogging services. Since pownce doesn’t want to let me in yet, I decided to go with jaiku. Its kind of cool, yet I don’t have any friends on the site, so I guess its a bit point less. Its seems these means of communication are getting just down right out of control. I get really turned off by facebook when I log on and my landing page its chucked full of a bunch shit I don’t really care about. I really don’t care if so and so when shopping at the mall, or such and such just got done taking a shit. And no, I don’t want a gift from you and certainly don’t want to join your beer pong players anonymous group. I guess thats the direction the social networking world is heading, so I might as well embrace it, or get the fuck out. So I’ll start with jaiku.

So back to my point. Last week I was looking at my news feeds on my site and saw it hadn’t been updated in a while. My original plan was to enter these news links manually, only putting the ones I choose from digg on there. Well, its a bit cumbersome to do that, so I thought about incorporating my digg feed into joef.org. I did this a long time ago with a little PHP parsing magic, but removed it for whatever reason. Then I thought about seeing what the digg api had to offer. It turned out to be more complicated that I thought it would be, so I reverted back to the PHP parsing I originally created. then with a little searching around the digg site, I saw you can add custom feeds to your site with a little javascript snippet created right these as you set the filters. Then I saw yesterday mourning that they added a widget to the plethora of integration tools. Its very similar to the jaiku one I set up on my site as well. Custom colors and even size.

So I guess I’ll rock these integration tools for a while. But remember, as George Keith Funston would say – Automation does not make optimism obsolete.

duh

Oh yeah, and this just in…it appears fat wreck chords is releasing some of its back catalog on vinyl, beginning with Lagwagon’s DUH. I don’t really buy any vinyl, but this would be sweet ass to own.

first but many to come…

20 November 2005 | blog, life | No Responses

Hello to those who are visiting. First off, I would like to thank you for visiting the joe fearnley web place.. I started this site back in the summer time, working on it on and off. I have the initial design down but have a long way to go in the background of this bad oscar.

The first thing would have to be integrating a blogging mechanism into this site. Though I have it almost completed, the backlash of internet security is the main drawback. I have looked into using systems like wordpress and movable type, but once I tried to figure out how to create my own style for something like this, it seems quicker just to build it myself. So as my foolishness gets the best of me, I find it more and more difficult the deeper I proceed into development. So maybe I will just say “screw it”, conform, and look back on how much time I wasted trying to DIM.

I suppose the next step would be to have comments for the blogs and a designated area for visitors to say what they would like.
