Since this day only happens every four (or is it five?) years, I thought I would write about it. I see I am not the only one that was wondering this – why the hell are we working today? I mean come on current employer, we get good friday off and not leap day or martin luther king jr. day? What next? Jesus’ birthday? Racists.

On top of even having to get up today, it seems that this snow will not stop. So if this god is really all omnipotent and shit, tell that cock sucker to bring on some sunshine. I getting really effing depressed down here. On top of that, as I am half way to work, the guy on the radio comes on to suggest giving yourself a little extra time to get to work today being that the roads are completely covered with a few inches of snow. Not shit buddy. Where were you 15 minutes ago when I was in the shower?

I guess I can pray to st patty. Please dude, can bring some warm weather with you? I guess thats more of a question. Regardless, fuck winter, winter sucks.

So last night I attended yet another punk rock show. Only if rachel understood. I myself begin questioning whether or not the hour and a half trek through treacherous michigan winter weather, paying ten dollars to get in, and buying drinks at the bar is going to be worth it. But macs is a bit different. Anytime I have been there its never packed and the blue ribbons are only two bucks a pop. Frankly, you cant afford not to.

This night’s show consisted of hell or highwater, cheap girls, fake problems, and smoke or fire. We showed up in time to catch half of hell or highwater’s set. I really like these guys. We need more of this kalamazoo. It was even better that they played rainbow in the dark even though the singer only knew some of the words.

Cheap girls played next but I didnt really pay attention to them. uh…right.

Next to take the stage was fake problems. Three things will stick in my head regarding this band on this night. a) the guitar player is very small. Like really small. I was peeing next to him and I thought he was a little kid (not like I looked at his weenis or anything, just measured by height) b) The singer was wearing cowboy boots. but whatever, the dude had a lot of soul for a white boy. c) the bass player’s bass guitar was ridiculously small. Come to find out, these are not that unique. All in all I dug them and they had a very interesting story about a wild turkey. Not to be confused with the wild turkey.

Finally, smoke or fire took the stage. Like before, they rocked my face off. Except this time I wasn’t surrounded by thirteen-year-old girls who needed to be protected from my drunken banter by their fourteen-year-old boyfriend and didn’t know who the hell Smoke or Fire was. Songs were sung and instruments were played and all was awesome. Except they didnt play this sinking ship. That kind of put them on my shit list then after talking to their goofy drummer they were taken off.

Ultimately it was a fun show, the guys weren’t dicks, and fisher had a good birfday. I also met gwomper from Avail at the bar. Apparently he plays the bass in Smoke or Fire. He toasted to Michigan and said that we were crazy for driving in this weather.

Fun fun.

black history month 2008

20 February 2008 | black history month | No Responses

So another black history month is upon us and I almost past it without acknowledgment. This year I wanted to pay homage to a great african american many seem to over look. Thats right, the one and only Mr. Jim Kelly. Not to be confused with the quarterback, Jim excelled in dojos across america as a professional martial artist. His craft was so polished even hollywood came calling. Staring in many films throughout the seventies, Jim hit the height of his career kung fuing along side the late great Bruce Lee.

blackbelt

The first saw Jim in the great exploitation film Black Belt Jones. Not only was this film action packed, but at twelve years old, surprisingly amusing to me. The next time I saw him was in Enter the Dragon a couple of years later. I never actually realized this was the same guy until about a month ago. Then when I thought about it, I asked myself how many black professional kung fuers could there be? Then I realized that Kareem Abdul-Jabar was actually in a film with Bruce Lee. I suppose I have to watch more kung fu (or more black exploitation files, who knows.)

Its too late this year, but I got a great idea for this month – better luck next. I gotta go, Pam Grier’s on the L Word.

Happy Black History month everyone.

Holy christ these people on this wipe swap show are religious. I cant honestly say that I would clean for jesus or that the kids constitution is the best way to raise a child, but who I am to judge. I just hope this chick dont grow up and marry someone as goonie as her father .

I discovered this afternoon that my site just doesnt look completely correct with internet explorer. Actually it looks completely wrong, but thats what I get for not looking at it in IE before rolling it out. Really only the header’s goofy, but I am in the process of fixing it. I am hoping that no one is honestly using IE to surf the internet. But that happens. And if it does, think about changing lanes.

In other news, I think I joined a band. Well, actually kind of start one. After the first rock session this week, I have a good feeling. Its going have soul and it rips. I hope I get some inspiration this weekend after attending the loved ones show this weekend. Oh, and the gaslight anthem is playing as well (shit yeah !!). This new EP of theirs is totally rad to my ears. My only complaint is that its only four songs thus am afraid that I might get sick of it too quickly. I would have an opinion on the new loved ones, but the best buy and no other store in my neck of the woods carries it. I really dont want to make this digital transition but unfortunately its inevitable.

Holy smoke these last couple of weeks have appeared before my eyes. First off, I went to texas for five days on a excursion for work. I learned a few things while there. Most of them fairly irrelevant but at the same time very interesting. Everyone drives a pickup truck, bar-b-que is on every corner, and I have never heard “ya’ll” used so much in a week let a lone an entire conversation. Regardless of the culture shock, work was done, friends were made, and fun was had.

I have also toook the step to update my site here. WordPress is quite the animal. Ease and confusion set in at the same time as I dredge my way through, but all will come in due time. I still have not completely figured out how to use images correctly. Because of this I am assured a crap load of broken links in these blog posts, but whatever, I will figure it out. Kinks getting out, bare with me.

Also, its safe to say a band with me included does exist. Rock or rock? That is the question. Regardless, I am stoked and the future only holds gnarly things. News on this later.

wait what??
