re-serve it up – install 2
28 September 2007 | dell server, lab | No Responses
So I got gentoo installed. Yet not without an issue. It always seems to end up this way. For some reason I get the following message when the machine boots:
!!! Block 303 is not a valid boot device
Then, for what ever reason, I have to manually choose the boot device – /dev/hd3 and it boots fine. I dont know why at this point, I gave up trying to figure it out because the office is on. My initial theory is there is an issue with either an issue with the fstab or lilo configuration files. Again, at this point, I dont know and dont care. It can wait until the weekend.
My next move is to fix this problem then get the frame buffer working. From there its on to installing the individual servers. I am thinking the following is what we are going to shoot for:
- ssh server – too access the box remotely
- ftp server – to get files to and from
- LAMP server – to eventually view web pages from anywhere
- samba server – to share files with other boxes around my home network
we’ll be in touch

Ok, so I as mentioned last time. I decided to take on another server project. I decided to ditch the dell as desktop computer and re-invent it as a home server. Instead of trying to manually remove everything (including the X server), I decided to start again from scratch.
After a solid backup of everything I need on the box, I downloaded the latest version of ubuntu server and gentoo minimal install CDs and was on my way. After getting a bit used to using ubuntu as a desktop OS at work, I thought I would give it a try as a server. The installation was a snap. It even gave me the option to installed LAMP and in 15 minutes I has the core of the server. This takes a good several hours to do on gentoo, so of course I thought this was meant to be. Yet after the initial login, nothing felt right. The commands are slightly different, I cant find things, certain things are not installed. I cant believe how accustom I have become to gentoo.

So, needless to say, it didnt take long to begin the gentoo installation. During which I came to the realization, after three years of using the OS, I am getting pretty good at the installation. What ever that means. So, after a bit of the following, I am on my way:
# emerge –sync
# emerge portage
So, now the thick things are out of the way, its on the the fun. I dont think I have the time to finish tonight. But I will continue tomorrow.
I do have to add that I really dig the new frame buffer and splash logo. I guess I am a sucker for a but of eye candy.

So, its official, I am hitched. Its not that different. It just feels good that everything is over with. Yet, at the same time, its a bit depressing. I was surrounded by a lot of friends and family for longer than I have in a while and then it was right back to work. Oh well, I have the fall to look forward to.
I did come to the realization that I truely need to get my life organized. I have been using the the uncalendar since college and has helped a bit to get my life in line, but not all the way. I figure with the combination of this and some digital tools I can really get down to business. I think i am going to take a page from the book of merlin mann and try out some life hacks. Maybe even read a book about it. But I dont see this happening. Yet, this kind of attitude is a perfect example of why the orginization in my life is the way it it. It time to take some steps.
In other news, I went to the kalamazoo irish fest last weekend and had a great time. Except when I tried to get on Jason’s shoulders and fell into the flower bed and landed on my hand. I havent been able to move my figures very well, thus cant play the guitar. I really hope this wears off by sunday. I need to rock.

Wow, one month, no entry, I feel like a fool. I’ve been real busy this last month, unfortunately is was not in the lab. But after this weekend, thats all going to change. I got a lot in the works and its gonna be fun. The temperature is lowering in the lab because summer is ending and fall is almost here, so thats a relief.
I finish the joef.org mobile version about two days after my last post. As far as the user agent recognition goes, I cant really test it at this point. I sat on my phone last weekend and am waiting until after the wedding to get a new one. When I mean sat on it, I mean I literally sat on the thing and broke the screen all to shit. It was in my back pocket and I somehow forgot about it. Maybe it was the the booze and strippers, but I beg to differ.
So far as the things in the works. I have decided after the sweatfest I am going to start a band. No, really this time. I got almost four songs written (no vocals yet) and am going to record them as soon as I complete them. I am going for a nineties melodic hardcore sound. Its gonna be sweet.
Other than that, I have decided to turn the dell desktop into a server. The maverick was just not cutting it. Loud, slow, and using up a bunch of useless power. I am going for it this time. I will document the process. I currently am updating the portage tree, then to version 2007.0 of gentoo. I attempt to remove X11 and gnome from it. We’ll see how that goes.
The college housing application has got about no where. I pretty much gave up on it. It has potential. Maybe when I have some free time I will finish it. After last to speaking with jeff about it, it sounds like he wants to go into a search able map direction. I saw a book on developing google map apps with php and ajax. Maybe this can be my chance to finally dive into ajax. We’ll see.

laber day

Another week down and I am still alive. This is really something considering I had two bachelor parties in one week. My liver should took a beating this last week, but what’s new? I am also that much closer to getting hitched. Its a bit surreal sometimes, but we must forge ahead, leaving the past in the past.
Monday night was pretty dang gnarly. We got take a road trip in a van to a punk rock show and saw a couple of really sweet bands. Rise against have come along way since seeing them a few years ago. They are like rock stars now with this giant show they put on. I guess with that kind of budget and hit singles, you gotta kind of expect that. I think one of the hight lights of the night was seeing smoke or fire. They have been on of my favorite bands these last couple of years. Lost my voice after watching them…story to tell. Comback kid was sweet and silverstien not so much. Ending the night at little darlings was just icing on the cake.
Last saturday was a bit of a different story. Burgers, beers, chickin wings, a little golf, and a night ended a murphy lee’s couldnt have been a better formula for a good time. Though I am now broke and need a new phone, I wouldnt want to take it back. Like in the song that seemed to be the soundtrack to the week, I wouldn’t have changed anything for the world.
