I have been listening to a shit load of podcasts lately. Punk rock related if I can find them, yet mainly tech related. It seems every person that was on the screen savers, got in touch with every other geeky friend of theirs and know has tech-related show on the internet. I love it. The number of them is truly endless. It brings me back to the techTV days in college. Getting up on all the latest tech trends I miss in my daily visits to digg. I mean I guess I am up on the latest trends, but to here intelligent discussions about them lets me understand them a lot better.
My one exception is diggnation. Seeing as how kevin rose seems to be one of the coolest guy and the website he created gets my attention more that anything else in the world, I thought the show would be sweet. I guess it wouldn’t be that bad but alex albrecht’s voice drives me friggin insane. I have tried many times and still cannot get through an entire episode. His humor is ridiculous and it seems to worsen the drunker the two get. Regardless, the thought of getting drunk with one of my friends each week, talk about bullshit, and record it sounds like a fun idea. I am thinking the lab just found a new project. We can have a weekly broadcast, it could be sweet.

Bad news on the horizon ventures me to this entry. I work with a guy who recently got denied for a work visa in the united states. After all he went through to get to the point where he is now, it only takes one mistake on an application to sail your dreams down the river.
He’s from south america and came to the states to go to college. He had to pass all the necessary entrance exams to get accepted in to college, then all the entry exams to get into the country. Not to mention learn the language. He was a varsity athlete, went to school for four years, graduated, then applied for a work US work visa.
All of this time and money spent to see it all come to a screeching halt because a date was incorrect on a piece of paper. When 160,000 people apply, I guess one has to consider the odds in the whole situation.
Immigration is such a debate at this time in this country. I really dont have a view on the subject other than I think its ridiculous that these “Americans” have no sense of the history of this land. Like europeans didn’t invade the place and kill off many of the natives who occupied it. Then they feel they have a right to say others shouldnt be allowed because they were lucky enough to be born here.
I dont know enough about the immigration system to say whether or not the current policies or procedures are the correct fit. But I do know that I have never truly felt that lucky to have been born a natural citizen of the united states until I saw what happened to this guy.
On a surreal note, I was listening to the smoke or fire song “What separates us all” at the time he’s telling me about the denial. I look at this song as the band’s rodney king quote (or aj soprano if you’ve you been watching the show). If I were a person looking for a land of opportunity, Id’s skip this section of north america and head to CA, even if it’s bit colder. Plus there would be a lot more hockey. Go Wings.

I have the server setup pretty much complete. I found out to set static dhcp addresses to all of the computers on my network to give me some consistency. Again I decided to scrap the use of dns for the server, but in the process I discovered something called dynamic dns that should help me do what I originally wanted to achieved, and a whole lot more.
I’ve heard of ddns before, but never really knew what its purpose was. The thing is, I don’t have a static ip address for my router at home, which receives a dynamic one from my ISP. So I set up an account with www.dyndns.org and I found out how to configure my router to update the the ddns service with my correct ip address resolved from my the domain name I choose, joef.homelinux.com. The next step was to configure the correct (but secure) port forwarding on the router to forward all incoming traffic to the maverick server. Then I installed the ddclient daemon on the server, which aids in the process of updating my routers current ip address. Now, not only can I remotely access this box via ftp and ssh inside my network, I now have the possibility to access it outside of my network. I can also set up the http server and host websites from the lab. Pretty cool if I ask my self.
“Self, do you think this is cool?” “Yes, self,” I replied, “I think it is very cool. You should buy take the money that you pay for hosting services and buy a new server. Then you could host you website from home.”
At this point, I cant truly confirm that this is all working correctly, its still in its testing phase…damn near complete none the less. The final step is to get another domain name possibly more suitable for the lab, pay the money, and register it. Then ultimately host all of my sites here in house. But that brings some financial constraints that can be taken care of further down the road.
This is a big step as far as my networking knowledge is concerned. But the productivity doesn’t stop here. Its on to the next project. Which, at this point hasn’t been determined yet.

So I got LAMP install on the server. Again I decided to scrap the DNS thing and was going to set all my PC’s to have static ip addresses, but I think I am going to hold off until I get sick of typing 192.168.0.103 in to the browser. Installing ProFtpd was a snap as well. I can now access the server with gftp…were in, were out, were sleeping.
At this point my next step is to install samba and get that configured. A file server is the third component to my accomplishment with this thing. So, here goes nothing, the third variable to the equation. I am running out of words to say, until next time.
